IN EFFECT CATCHES UP WITH LOUICHI MAYORGA OF LUICIDAL. YOU MAY REMEMBER HIM FROM HIS DAYS WITH SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. IN THIS INTERVIEW WE GO OVER THE OLD AND THE NEW AS LUICIDAL MAKES A PUSH WITH THEIR NEW ALBUM THAT IS OUT NOW TITLED "BORN IN VENICE"

REST IN PEACE TODD 'YOUTH" SCHOFIELD

On October 27th news broke that Todd “Youth” Schofield had passed away. Memorial gatherings are scheduled for November 4th in Los Angeles and on November 8th in NYC. Todd’s fingerprints are all over NYHC's history and that fact can never be changed. What is posted below was originally posted on the In Effect Hardcore Facebook page the following day after some processing of this fucked up news.

I didn’t know Todd Youth from back in the day. It wasn’t until maybe 2 years ago that we noticed his Instagram account reacting to many of our posts before we made a contact. From there we went on to collaborate on 2 interviews that I am pretty proud of. The second  one with Todd and his bandmate Israel from Fireburn was one I won’t forget as I sat in my car in my driveway at 11pm at night calling them at their rehearsal studio in California. Earlier this year I called Todd to get his take on the classic Antidote and CFA 7”s that turned 30 years old this year and he was just as real and personable from my earlier encounters. When the news broke of Todd’s passing on Saturday part of my youth also died. As said earlier I didn’t know him personally until recently but I have known his music personally for decades. He played on records that literally changed my life and it was his ideas and direct influence on those records that made them so special. Saturday in New York was a shitty, rainy and windy day and most of it was spent trapped at home with not much in the way of distractions to forget about this sad news. Many of you have posted tributes, old photos, live performances and memories. I guess all of this is a way for us to cope with it all. Hopefully by posting these 2 old interviews it helps some of you out there cope with a shitty situation.

REST IN PEACE TODD SCHOFIELD aka TODD YOUTH!

20 QUESTIONS WITH TODD YOUTH   NOVEMBER 2017 FIREBURN

QUICK HITS:

This past week Eddie Sutton and LEEWAY released the first new Leeway music since 1995’s “Open Mouth Kiss” album in the form of the track “I’m Your Pusher”. This 4 plus minute track was recorded at Soundwars Studios and is the “A side” to an upcoming 2 song 45 RPM 7” which they hope to release by year’s end. This mid-paced track brings back the sound and feel of both “Open Mouth Kiss” as well as their 1994 release “Adult Crash”. Backing Eddie on this new song are: Dan Nastasi- guitars, Gordon Ancis- lead guitars, Dank DeLong- bass and John Milnes- drums. Listen to the new track HERE.

THE ABDUCTORS are this really good Punk/Oi band from Connecticut that formed in 2009 and have multiple releases to their name including 2017’s “Coming Home” which put them on our radar. Becky and Mike McAuley caught up with their drummer Stefan for a quick 6 minute video interview which you can check out HERE.

The new SICK OF IT ALL album “Wake The Sleeping Dragon” is out now, and along with it comes the third music video off of it in “That Crazy White Boy Shit”. Check it out HERE and then head over to our reviews section to see what our dude Core Junkie had to say about it as well.

Long Island’s ENEMY OF THE STATE have also announced they have broken up. Thank you for your modern day take on 1980’s era thrash/crossover. See what YOU missed by clicking HERE.

Since our last update the hardcore music world lost a good man in Kenny Ahrens who was the singer on the highly influential URBAN WASTE 7” that came out way back in 1982. Kenny was involved in an automobile accident in Florida and did not survive. REST IN PEACE Mr. Ahrens. We reached out to his old bandmate Johnny Waste who also played on that early 80’s classic 7” and he had this to say:

“Kenny had some great messages in both his lyrics and in his thoughts… one that he shared often was, "If you want to keep the scene alive, start a band". It was important Kenny get this message out to everyone. So who knows, maybe someone will read this and think about starting a band? Whether there is some important message to get out there, or just to have some fun playing music! I'm going to miss my friend, I don't know what else to say, except that Kenny was a good person… he loved life, the people he knew and most definitely loved his dogs. Kenny's not into punk rock and he's not into hardcore, but he sure did love his B52s! R.I.P. Kenny "Waste" Ahrens”.

QUICK HITS:

October 31st is the date LEEWAY NYC plans to release their new track called “Pusher” which will also be accompanied by a music video. This will be the first new music Eddie Sutton has done under the Leeway name in over 20 plus years and will also feature Gordon Ancis who was the old Leeway’s first lead guitar player. About the new song Eddie told us “The song is called “Pusher” even though the whole chorus has me saying “I’m not your pusher”… it’s a song about enabling a significant other from the streets while fighting drug addiction”.  On the new song’s sound Eddie also told us “the other beautiful thing is this track and the one that will follow SOUNDS LIKE LEEWAY… if we all were together I do believe the natural flow that we created here sounds as if it was done by the same band today. Say what you want when you hear it but you can’t front because it’s just as good. Every man delivered. I’m grateful to finally get here and with all the right people who believe in me moving forward as the Last of The Mohicans.” “Pusher” will be followed up with another new track (as well as video) with digital downloads to accompany each tracks release and eventually a 45 RPM hard copy with both songs included. LONDON'S RUCKTION RECORDS TURNS 20

IN EFFECT SALUTES OUR UK FRIENDS

2018 marks 20 years of dedication, hard work and passion for London Hardcore label RUCKTION RECORDS, and on June the 2nd the label celebrates this milestone with a huge show, featuring 10 UK bands who span right across the history of Rucktion, from early signings such as Nine Bar and Diction, all the way through to newer acts such as Proven, Life Betrays Us and Tempers Fray.

Since 1998 Rucktion Records has consistently released and supported music from across the hardcore spectrum. The label is known primarily for popularizing the hard and heavy London sound pioneered in the 1990's by bands such as Knuckledust and Ninebar, a style and a scene whose influence can be seen to this day in current Rucktion acts such as Prowler, Bun Dem Out and Idle Hands.  However, Rucktion has always been keen to expand outside of the capital, working with bands from all over the UK as diverse as True Valliance, Divide, Broken Oath, Deal With It and Chains Of Hate, showing a willingness to support UK hardcore as well as a desire to transcend genres. In addition to this, Rucktion has released several recordings from overseas acts such as Pennsylvania USA’s highly successful Wisdom In Chains, long-standing Belgian veterans Surge Of Fury, and cult favorites from Baltimore MD, the legendary Stout.

Crossing through subgenres and scenes, from raging hardcore punk to furious metallic beatdown, Rucktion Records has always refused to be pidgeon-holed. A visit to one of their regular London gigs will confirm this, as the label has been consistently putting on shows in the capital for well over a decade. For much of this period Rucktion had a regular monthly residency at London’s iconic 12 Bar Club in the heart of the capital’s West End, putting on bands from all over the UK and beyond. Due to development of the area the club sadly closed its doors for the last time in early 2015. The loss of this venue and these nights left a major hole in London’s scene, until Rucktion secured regular slots at the Unicorn in Camden, where they continue to put on a wide array of acts several times a year. The label is also keen to promote talent from all over the world, distributing numerous  bands and other labels, via mail order and at any show featuring Rucktion acts, alongside an ever-increasing selection of Rucktion t-shirts, hoodies, caps, beanies and more.

Rucktion's latest signing, London’s Ironed Out, feature members of several other Rucktion acts, and have a fresh new sound that takes the established formula from their previous bands to a whole new level,  while proudly displaying their strong roots in the scene they grew up in. Sticking as true as ever to the DIY ideals that first inspired them all those years ago, Rucktion Records continues to support local talent and build on the strong legacy it has created over the last two decades.

Our friends over at WTF RECORDS (NL) have a nice lineup of new releases out now and on the way from 3 Dutch bands that all vary in the styles of hardcore punk that they play, something that is pretty common if you look up and down the WTF roster.

First up is the new PROBATION 6 song EP titled “Fucked By Life” which is hard and heavy as fuck. A video for the track “Imperial Needle” is out now and can be seen HERE.

Next is SUPERHERO STATUS who will release the 7 song “Escape The Herd” EP on May 25th. Superhero Status have more of that uplifting old-school sound that reminds me of H2O a lot.

Last up for this round of WTF releases is the new GET SOME 5 song EP titled “Freaky, Filthy, Frustrated” due out on June 1st. The video for the song “Yourself” can be seen HERE.

WTF is also a distro and seems to specialize in CD releases while also branching out beyond their borders with recent releases from NYC’s Scarboro and Boston’s Cheech. A label that is doing good things and should be on your radar!

QUICK HITS: MADBALL COMPLETES RECORDING FOR THEIR UPCOMING LP "FOR THE CAUSE"

From left: Madball's Mike, Freddy, Rancid's Tim Armstrong, Hoya and engineer Kevin Bivona

MADBALL have finished recording for their new album titled "For The Cause" with mixing and mastering now taking place by Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studios in Denmark. Co-producer Tim Armstrong from Rancid will appear on the track "The Fog". Actor/rapper and Body Count frontman Ice-T also appears on the new album on the track "Evil Ways". "For The Cause" will contain 12 songs plus a bonus track. Former Madball guitarist Matt Henderson (who now plays in The Eulogy based out of Los Angeles) laid down all the guitar tracks for the new album with long time Madball guitarist Brian "Mitts" Daniels recently parting ways with the band. An additional guest on their new album is guitarist Steve Whale from The Business who laid down a lead for one track. At this time the search for a permanent new guitarist continues but has not slowed Madball’s show scheduling down with shows this past week in Eastern Canada and a return to NYC at the Brooklyn Bazaar set for Saturday March 10th.

Some quotes that came in to us via a presser from Madball's label Nuclear Blast included frontman Freddy Cricien commenting on working with Rancid's Tim Armstrong: “Tim and us go way back, he‘s an old friend and super talented guy... across the board! A legend in his own right. He invited us to come record with him and it all fell into place very organically. He‘s respected our band from day one and was excited to be a part of this. We‘re honored to have him on board.”

Bass player Hoya added: "We got a real good album. It feels like the movie "Pulp Fiction". We've got every style of hardcore in there. It feels like we've got something special!"

Ice- T added: “It‘s an honor to record with the legendary Madball. Body Count draws its closest similarities to NY Hardcore. This is a natural.”

And Freddy also added: "It's truly an honor to have Ice-T on our record! I grew up on his music from his early hip hop stuff till now. He's an iconic figure but also a “class act”, you don't always get both at once. Ice has a great respect for NYHC and Madball, means the world. This was meant to happen.... real recognizes real."

NRSV: "WASTED FOR LIFE"

NO REDEEMING SOCIAL VALUE who have not put out a new record since 2012's "America's Favorite Hardcore Band" EP are getting closer to completion on their next release which will be a full length album titled "Wasted For Life". New tracks include: "Brew Crew" (a tribute to their friends), "Don't Tell Me" (a punk rock anthem), "I'm Gonna Puke" (a country western song), and "Shatterproof" (which will be the first single, and will be released on 7" by Pitchfork). Recording and mixing has taken place over the past year and change at various studios with their drummer Glen Lorieo adding on to his own personal list of NYHC band recordings. Dead City Records will handle the U.S. release which should be available on digital, CD and vinyl. 2018 marks 30 years of brew, mayhem and hardcore for the NRSV Crew.
