IN EFFECT CHAMPIONS FANZINE CULTURE WITH THIS NEW ARTICLE COVERING SOME OF THE BEST READS WE HAVE COME ACROSS OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS

QUICK HITS:

WRECK-AGE RECORDS which was a force in the 1990’s NYHC scene is making a comeback with owner/founder Pavlos Ioanidis recently handing over the reins to Chris Enriquez and Artie Shepherd… Enriquez with deep ties within the heavy music community in NY with handling marketing/sales at various media outlets while also playing guitar in Total Meltdown and drums in Spotlights. Sheppard owns the famed Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn while also being able to claim Wreck-Age lineage having been in Bad Trip and Mind Over Matter. The first release/re-issue will be Silent Majority’s “Life Of A Spectator” which was originally released in 1997. When asked for some more info on the rebirth of Wreck-Age Chris Enriquez had this to say…

“Our combined efforts in merchandising, which ended up being insanely successful during a very traumatic year for most businesses got us thinking about rare hardcore/punk records that were out of print, more specifically, Silent Majority's "Life Of A Spectator" which Artie actually produced in the late 90's. It came out on the Wreck-Age imprint, EXIT around that time period and is worth somewhere between $150-$200 on Discogs. It hasn't been in print for 20 plus years and subsequently nothing from the Wreck-Age/EXIT catalog is in print. Not to mention, most of it isn't even available via streaming. Silent Majority's "Life Of A Spectator" is a legendary album that is the epitome of Long Island Hardcore and helped influence so many bands that went on to become insanely popular like Taking Back Sunday, Glassjaw, Brand New and Movielife to name a few.

I personally felt that it was such a shame that Long Island Hardcore and specifically the 90's NYHC scene that lived at ABC No Rio which many people referred to as post hardcore or artsy hardcore, which Wreck-Age was a HUGE proponent of was also incredibly under-documented compared to other parts of the NYHC scene and other hardcore punk scenes in general. Bands like Mind Over Matter, Neglect, Stillsuit, Die116, Bad Trip, Silent Majority, Tripface, Motive, Indecision, Sons Of Abraham and so many more were such incredible bands that we felt should have bigger legacies to be remembered and honored by. We reached out to the original owner, Pavlos Ioanidis and he was flattered by our interest and gave us his blessing to carry on the legacy of what he had started so we could bring it into modern times. With the help of artist, Andrew Kassl (of Perfect World and Total Meltdown) who is also part of Wreck-Age, we did a soft launch in 2021 by relaunching the label's website, Facebook and Instagram, where people can buy Wreck-Age merch and we are also starting to roll out some band merch as well. During this time, we decided that Silent Majority "Life Of A Spectator" will be our first release and the decision to do this actually happens to coincidentally take place as the album is turning 25 this year. This re-issue has been re-mastered by Mario Quintero (of Spotlights) and Silent Majority vocalist, Tommy Corrigan is working on re-designing the packaging as well as working on new merchandise. We don't have a street date yet but it will definitely be coming out this year and everyone can follow us for updates on all things Wreck-Age/EXIT”.

WTF RECORDS from The Netherlands and NY’s POINT BLANK are teaming up to release “(We Will) Rise Again” which is due out on January 21st. The 17 song album was recorded in two days back in November of 2020 at Serious Music Business in Brooklyn. The album will be available digitally through Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and You Tube with a CD digipack available as well. A vinyl version will be available this spring and come in three different color variants. Artwork by: BobbyDrawsSkullz. Check out the lyric video for the track “Make A Difference” by clicking HERE. To pre-order the CD you can visit the WTF Records website HERE

WTF RECORDS will return with more NYHC just one week later as they team up with THE CAR BOMB PARADE on January 28th for the release of “New World Hardcore”; a 4 song EP that will be available on 7” vinyl as well as CD digipack. You can check out the new lyric video for “Trash Life” HERE.

When asked about the new record Car Bomb guitarist Will Ramone told us: “New World Hardcore is not just the title of the release but the band’s mission statement and mindset. We take the ideals of NYHC and expand them outwards and globally. Everyone is included, and everyone is encouraged to participate no matter where they reside. We feel it’s important to honor and respect those who carried the flag paving the way for all hardcore and punk bands to exist today, but it’s equally as important to pick up that flag and encourage everyone to fly it with us. Thus, New World Hardcore is born. Fans can expect our signature blend of hardcore and punk with some surprises and new flavors tossed in. A lot is packed into 4 songs”.

This will be The Car Bomb Parade’s last record featuring their singer the Rev. Nicky Bullets who cited family life and the distance between his home in Massachusetts and NY as his reason for his leaving. The Car Bomb Parade still plan on doing a farewell show with Bullets in the upcoming months with vocal auditions getting underway soon as well. Contact the band through their social media if you want to try out! US fans can order the new 7” through Car Bomb's Big Cartel page, with Euro orders being taken by both WTF Records as well as Berlin’s Coretex Records

NY’s REBELMATIC will be releasing a new single titled “Walk On Water” in late February/early March. This new track will be part of an upcoming 4 song EP titled “Mourning Dove” due out in April with plans for a new full length to drop this fall. The “Mourning Dove” EP due this spring will also feature a track with Fishbone’s Angelo Moore on guest vocals. In the meantime make sure to check out Rebelmatic’s “Ghost In The Shadows” album which was released in August of 2020.

Brooklyn NY’s ROTTEN BASTARD RECORDS have a pair of new releases starting first with Flatbush’s own MAD MULLIGANS with the 6 song EP titled “Action Men”. This release came out on January 1st and is the follow up to their “Who Are The Mad Mulligans” debut that came out in December of 2020. Mad Mulligans’ members are veterans of the NYC punk and hardcore scene playing traditional punk/Oi! in the style of Blitz, The Business and Sham 69. You can find their latest online through You Tube or Spotify with CD versions available through the Rotten Bastard website.

Rotten Bastard is also releasing the latest from Brooklyn’s SKISM titled “Capitol Lies”. This release is due out on CD on January 28th but you can already stream or download it via the Skism Bandcamp page. Although Skism plays old-school punk with hardcore and Oi! influences this release does have some surprises with a punked up cover of “Runaround Sue” by Dion And The Belmonts as well as the track “You” which shows a more rockabilly feel. Keep an eye on the Rotten Bastard Records pages for ordering info. Back in November Rotten Bastard also released the latest from NYC punk veterans SPIKE POLITE AND SEWAGE titled “Pandemonium” which is their latest 6 song EP.

Former Awkward Thought and Shell Shock guitarist SCOOT HORTON has been playing his own brand of “Alt-Country/Americana” for a few years now and has a brand new album titled “Empty Bottles” due out on February 11th. You can check out a video for the song “Old Punks” off that new album by clicking HERE. Scoot has an IndieGoGo campaign attached to this release as well and you can find out more about it by clicking HERE

IGNITE will be releasing their new 10 song self-titled full length on March 25th through Century Media Records, their first new album in nearly 6 years and the first with new vocalist Eli Santana. “On The Ropes” is the third preview track being released ahead of the new albums release date and comes with an accompanyin music video that is dedicated to Jon Bunch who sang for Ignite on a month long European tour in the summer of 2012. Jon sang for a few bands including Reason To Believe and Sense Field before his death in 2016. Ignite will be releasing info on a US tour in the next week or so with plans for Canada, Australia, Europe and South America also in the works. CD and 12” vinyl pre-orders for the new Ignite are available now through the Century Media Records website

The WAR BABIES “SHAMELESS IMBALANCE” LP which has seemingly been in the works for well over a year is nearing completion with their label HELLMINDED RECORDS recently announcing that the 23 song album will be coming out this March. The latest blip on this albums radar came when the test pressings of the new album were mistakenly mailed to a wrong address in another state and the person refused to send them back to the plant. It took a full extra month to wait for the replacement copies. What started as a “pass the time’ during quarantine project with scene vets Darren Nanos and Mike DeLorenzo has been pushed closer to the front burner with the duo now becoming a 4 piece with the addition of Cory from Total Meltdown on drums and Anna from Outskirts on bass. The most recent sample of War Babies material can be found via their “Body For Christ” track which came out as part of a 2 song 6” that came out last June.

BERTHOLD CITY will be releasing their 12 track debut full length titled “When Worlds Are Not Enough” on March 18th through WAR RECORDS. “With This Regret” is the first single to be made public through a recent NO ECHO article. For the uninitiated Berthold City was formed in 2017 and have two EP’s under their belts… they are fronted by Strife guitarist Andrew Kline who also happens to run their label, War Records. The new album was produced by Terror drummer Nick Jett and will be available on CD and vinyl. Click HERE to pre-order a copy as they seem to be moving fast.

New Jersey’s CHEMICAL X have a new song out titled “R.A.I.D.” which is off their upcoming EP titled “Highly Volatile” due out in mid-February which should also come with the release of a new music video as well. Check out the new track HERE. Fast? Melodic? Heavy? Check, check and check! You can also go down the Chemical X rabbit hole by clicking this ultra-convenient Link Tree

DRUG CHURCH (who have members from Albany, NY and Los Angeles) will be releasing their fourth full length album titled “Hygiene” on March 11th through PURE NOISE RECORDS. The latest sneak peek comes via a new music video for the song “World Impact”. A massive (by current US standards) US tour is set to kick off on March 6th and runs through April 17th with a total of 36 dates and support from One Step Closer, Soul Blind and Lurk.

PA’s GLOVES OFF recently released the second single from their upcoming “Life… And Everything After” album due out on January 28th through UPSTATE RECORDS. “My Death Was A Banquet” can be heard HERE with CD, vinyl and merch pre-orders available HERE

BRICK BY BRICK recently gave us their third sneak peek at their upcoming “Dismal Existence” album which is due out on February 18th through UPSTATE RECORDS. Click HERE to watch the music video for the track “The Hunted” which features the members of Brick By Brick as puppets in this Paul Sharkey produced video that sees their members meet unfortunate fates at the hands of their singer. Click HERE to pre-order “Dismal Existence”.

DECEMBER 22, 2021

From Madball playing a controversial show in NYC's Tompkins Square Park in April to Dead City playing under a Los Angeles freeway in May hardcore punk surely made its presence known in 2021 both within our sometimes perceived small circle and beyond. 2021 was the year of the Covid born band and "remote" bands, vinyl delays, and new music from the mighty Kill Your Idols. An influx of fresh thinking and song writing helped produce breakout music from bands like Stand Still, Method Of Doubt, Pacifist, Koyo, and One Step Closer while others like Dead Heat, Ekulu, Borstal, Countime, Broken Vow and literally tons of others kept the hard in hardcore going strong. This past year saw In Effect feature bands from not only the USA but also the UK, Canada, India, Sweden and Belgium... we had a book covering our existence as a fanzine from 1988 to 1999 published and in February of next year we will celebrate our 10th anniversary as a website... all while we creep closer to having 3 million visits to our little corner of the world wide web. We look forward to 2022 with anticipation as bands like Ignite, Regulate, Praise, Rejection Pact, Madball, Be Well, The Car Bomb Parade and more gear up for their next releases. Each person reading this had their own journey throughout 2021... the music they found, the music they loved... above is a collection of some of the images from the things In Effect came across this past year. Your 2021 musical experiences may have been similar or they could have been completely different. Check in with our social media pages to chime in on what you were feeling this past year and make sure to check out the In Effect Hardcore 2021 Spotify Playlist as well! Collage by: Paul Turano.

Earlier this week we got a pair of sneak peeks from upcoming UPSTATE RECORDS releases with new tracks from NY’s Brick By Brick and PA’s Gloves Off.

The new BRICK BY BRICK track titled “Evil Remains” is off of their “Dismal Existence” album that is due out on February 18th featuring guest vocals by Chuck Billy from Testament. Click HERE to give it a listen.

GLOVES OFF offer up the new track “Conqueror Worm” which is off of their “Life… And Everything After” album due out on January 28th. Click HERE to give it a listen. Both Upstate Records releases are available now for pre-order by clicking HERE

Another sneak peek we got recently is from DEVIL IN ME with “D.L.T.” which has guest vocals from Terror’s Scott Vogel. This is the second single off of the “On The Grind” album which is due out in January on DEAD SERIOUS RECORDINGS. Click HERE to listen to “D.L.T.”.

Finland’s ONE HIDDEN FRAME dropped a second single off of their upcoming “I Am Not Here” album which will be coming out with Canada’s THOUSAND ISLANDS RECORDS. “Information Blackout” is the newest preview that joins the previously released “Run To The Rescue With Love”. You can stream both tracks on various platforms by clicking HERE. For fans of Ignite and melodic hardcore.

THE CAR BOMB PARADE and their singer the Rev. Nicky Bullets (shown to the left) are parting ways citing family life and living too far away from the rest of the band (Bullets lives in Massachusetts and the rest of the band in NY). All of Car Bomb’s upcoming shows are still scheduled to go as planned and if you are up for the frontman gig the band asks that you message them through their social media which you can access by clicking their blue highlighted name at the start of this quick hit.

In our last update we told you about a new ANTIDOTE album that was in the works as well as a Midwest tour that started on December 1st. Half way through the tour the band made an announcement that the rest of the tour was cancelled and that singer Louie Rivera was no longer in the band. Incidents from a show in Milwaukee that were documented on the bands Instagram page were the cause of the cancellation and split with Rivera with a since deleted Instagram post containing much of the back and forth between Antidote and the people who took issue with the lyrics to Antidote’s “Foreign Job Lot” song. No word on the status of that upcoming Antidote album which they hoped to have out this spring. Stay tuned.

QUICK HITS:

The Louie Rivera/Rob Nunzio led version of NYHC greats ANTIDOTE are currently working on a brand new 12 song album tentatively titled “Back To The Business That Was Never Finished". Rivera and Nunzio have not appeared together on record since Antidote's classic 7" "Thou Shalt Not Kill” which came out in 1983. Joining this duo are new members Tino Valpa on drums and Laz Canny on bass. Recording has taken place in Connecticut and New Hampshire over the course of the last two months with things expected to wrap up in the next couple of weeks. Rivera recently told us that the new album will feature two recently written tracks along with many older ones written by Nunzio that were never finalized and have now been brought back to life. The band hopes to have this new material out by the spring of 2022 with New Hampshire based Pine Hill Records which is run by Antidote’s drummer Tino Valpa. Handling the art for the cover of the upcoming album will be George Sewell aka FAME in NYC graffiti circles. Antidote will take their show on the road starting on December 1st as they kick off a 17 date tour starting in Buffalo, NY before hitting various Midwest cities before wrapping things up on December 18th in Coplay, PA.

Vermont’s THE PATH have a new 5 song promo cassette out now with a clever title that takes a shot at the current slow turnaround times from the companies that produce vinyl records. “With Vinyl Turnaround Times Like These, Who Needs Enemies… “ is a 5 song cassette that contains songs from 4 upcoming releases The Path have scheduled with State Of Mind Recordings, Blind Rage Records, 625 Thrash, and Crew Cuts Records. The band picked a few songs from each release and are putting them out on this limited edition cassette to hold us all over. Click HERE to stream/download it or to pick up a cassette.

S.O.A.W.’s (Staring Out A Window) “Venting” is the second solo track from ex-Dead Blow Hammer guitarist Gary Yosco who recently relocated from New Jersey to Florida. The music was written in conjunction with his former DBH bandmate Carlos Diaz, with the drums performed and produced by Ben DeGennaro back at MacArthur Soundworks in New Jersey (where the last 3 Dead Blow Hammer records were recorded). If you like what you hear and live in the Tampa area and are looking to join a project like this please contact Gary through his Instagram page. Click HERE to check out the new track “Venting”.

SPACED out of Buffalo, NY (and pictured to the left) just teamed up with New Morality Zine to release “Two New Joints” which is the follow up to their four song demo that came out this past August. “Two New Joints” was available as a limited edition cassette and sold out the small run of just 50 copies that were made. In addition Spaced will be playing some Midwest dates with Broken Vow from January 19th through January 25th with a new EP currently being written and due out this spring. Stream or download “Two New Joints” by clicking HERE.

“Spaced is a 5 piece hardcore band from Buffalo, NY built to destroy stale genre conventions. With a unique perspective, Spaced delivers anthemic songs about individuality and summoning the strength to endure the trials of the modern world. “Two New Joints” demonstrates that the band has perfected the balance of both speed and stomp musically, while offering a sure-fire “fuck you” lyrically. “We don’t like to fit into the mold. We try to be as organically us as possible and that’s what we want to convey with our music. Our music is for the people who like standing out in a crowd and want to be true to themselves as much as possible. Embodying the notion of unconventional soundscapes and the intensity of hardcore, Spaced is far-out hardcore. We’re really proud of these tunes and are excited for everyone to hear them! Spaced is a middle finger to gatekeepers, sexists, and elitists. This is the new wave of hardcore. Get with it or get out of the way.”

Two new releases that just hit as we were going to update that you should keep an eye on. First up is a 3 song promo by Australia’s NO PEACE titled “Promo 2021”.  These 3 tracks will be on an upcoming full length on Safe Inside Records. Check out these new tracks on Bandcamp or Spotify.

The second being from the UK’s THE CHISEL titled “Retaliation”, their 14 song debut full length on London’s La Vida Es Un Mus Discos. Listen to “Retaliation” now through Bandcamp or Spotify with vinyl, cassette and CD versions available through La Vida Es Un Mus.

“Having formed in early 2020 and featuring a crew of members with long-term associations to the London punk scene, The Chisel quickly secured a reputation as one of the most exciting bands from a pool of contemporaries that includes Chubby & The Gang, Stingray and Big Cheese. Their sound is rooted firmly in punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. “Retaliation” is an unmistakably British record that draws a line from 1982 up to the present day, pushing its way into your collection and torching your stereo”.

PARRIS MAYHEW RETURNS WITH THE SECOND AGGROS INSTALLMENT IN "CITY KIDS"

AGGROS, the latest effort from ex-Cro-Mag guitarist Parris Mayhew is back after a little over a year since the release of their debut track “Chaos Magic”. The latest is the 9 plus minute track “City Kids” which comes with an accompanying music video shot on the streets of NYC by Parris himself who has directed a number of music videos in the past. When asked about the new track and the making of this video Parris told us that some of the riffs used on “City Kids” were actually part of a “Revenge” era Cro-Mags song called “Pull Me, Push Me” which was abandoned and did not make it on to that album. Parris also explained that he and his wife Barblin shot the initial performance at the LES Skatepark in Lower Manhattan one night before taking on jobs that included working on a movie in Atlanta as well as the television show “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in Hawaii. Upon completion of his other work Parris estimated that he put in about 6 total nights of shooting for “City Kids” over a 6 month period of time including one afternoon where they used a drone… all of this ending with 28 straight hours of editing to make the deadline they had agreed upon with Metal Injection who ran the premiere of the video. Parris’ 21 year old nephew John who is featured in the video makes custom art rugs, give him a follow at JuicyRugs. When asked what is the next track up for Aggros, Parris  mentioned “SK8Bored Fight” which is currently only 3:22 long and will also be released when the video is completed… something he also mentioned will not take as long as the gap between the first two Aggros songs. As for what’s next we are told that the third song should complete the plan for a three song Aggros 12” EP but Parris did leave the door open for a possible fourth song to jump into the mix. Other interesting tidbits from the making of this video is the German company NFTY Skateboards made three custom Aggros skateboards for the making of this video as well as teaming up with NYC based advertising agency Scenester Projects who project images on to buildings as part of marketing campaigns. In this instance Scenester projected the NFT Skateboard images on to a building for about an hour while Parris shot the footage making for more layers to an already amazing effort. Make sure to check out the new video by clicking HERE and following future Aggros happenings and events by following their Instagram account. For a more in depth look at Aggros check out our interview with Parris from last December.

CHECKING IN WITH REGULATE...

New York’s REGULATE have been working on their new 10 song album which should be out by the spring of next year. Recording wrapped up last week with Jon Markson on a farm in Flemington, New Jersey… you read that correctly… a farm! The unnamed farm has built a studio that they rent out to engineers and that is where Regulate recorded their new one. On December 10th Regulate will be headed to Colombia for a six date tour with Chicago’s Life’s Question and hometown crew Raw Brigade. Regulate’s frontman Sebastian Paba was born in Colombia and has not returned in over 20 years since he was a young kid. More upcoming Regulate gigs include November 28th at Copa De Oro in Perth Amboy, NJ, with Downfall and Cutdown, the Syracuse Hardcore New Year’s Day Matinee with Terror, Death Threat, One Step Closer (and a million others), and Disturbin’ The Peace in Baltimore on January 29th with Sick Of It All, Brace War, End it, Next Step Up and many more.  Photo by: Matt Viel.

Chicago’s NEW MORALITY ZINE which is just as much (or more) of a record label these days will be releasing the new BROKEN VOW 12” titled “Sane Minds End” on December 3rd. The 4 song EP will be released in conjunction with Sunday Drive Records (the two labels also did a joint release of Broken Vow’s “Promo 2021” on cassette earlier this year). "Sane Minds End" demonstrates that Broken Vow continues to cut their teeth on traditional hardcore of the 90’s, while simultaneously drawing in more metallic elements. The new EP builds upon the band's sense of urgency initiated on the demo. Lyrically the band continues to create a re-vitalizing social commentary for a new generation of hardcore kids. Combined with building guitar riffs, sharp bass lines, and galloping drums "Sane Minds End" is a new chapter for such a young, promising band”. You can check out one of the new tracks titled “Poison Peddling” by clicking HERE. Find pre-orders through New Morality and Sunday Drive by clicking on the blue hyperlinks.

Portugal’s DEVIL IN ME return with new music on January 14th of 2022 with a new album titled “On The Grind”. This is their first new album since 2015’s “Soul Rebel” and will be released on Dead Serious Recordings. Terror’s Scott Vogel makes a guest appearance of the new album and there is also a music video already out for the new track “War”. Click HERE to check it out. Shortly after the release of their new album Devil In Me will be going on a 17 date tour with Comeback Kid, Be Well and Scowl that starts on January 19th in Berlin and makes stops in The Netherlands, the UK, Italy, France, and the Czech Republic before wrapping up at the famed Conne Island in Leipzig, Germany on February 4th.

Back in September IGNITE returned with their first new music since 2016 with the single (and music video) "Anti-Complicity Anthem". The track featured new frontman Eli Santana who replaces long time Ignite frontman Zoli Teglas. Now, just two months later Ignite have returned with more new music in "The River". “The River takes a look at the dark and murky immigration issues that our country is facing at this very moment and the toll it is taking on children and their families.” You can check out the music video for this new one by clicking HERE. The first single along with the flipside track ("Turn XXI") will be released and distributed by Revelation Records while Ignite works towards their goal of bringing fans their newest full length album.

REVELATION RECORDS recently announced that they will be putting out the next PRAISE album this coming spring. The nine song release will be titled “All In A Dream” and was recorded throughout the pandemic in Baltimore with Kevin Bernsten and Brian McTernan. Praise’s lineup consists of: Andy Norton, Anthony Dye, Austin Stemper, Chris Bavaria and Daniel Fang (who many may know from Turnstile). Praise has a few releases dating back to 2010 with their 2016 “Leave It All Behind” album being their last album. Click HERE to give it a listen and keep up to date with the new album by following Praise’s socials on Instagram and Twitter

Upstate NY’s BRICK BY BRICK will be releasing a new 11 track album titled “Dismal Existence” on February 18th on UPSTATE RECORDS. With Testament’s Chuck Billy offering up guest vocals on opening track “Evil Remains”, two European tours and a US run in the works Brick By Brick hope to pick back up the momentum they were building when the pandemic hit. The closing track on “Dismal Existence” is a cover of Sick Of It All’s “Just Look Around” which also includes a special remixed outro by Grammy Award winning producer Stress The White Boy with vocals by Lord Willin’. Click HERE to check it out. "Dismal Existence" was the title chosen because it seems that everything gets worse as we get older. Politics, social media, and all other propaganda are consuming the sheep of this world and they are taking things literally and leading this world to its fate."- Mike Valente, Brick By Brick. Pre-orders and merch are available now through the Upstate Records website shop

Earlier this year Long Island’s TENSION* announced that they were getting back together and dropped a new single for the track “11:34” which was their first new music since their 2014 “The End Of All We Knew” album. After a hiatus that started shortly after that spring announcement Tension* are now back as a four piece and are finishing up work on a seven song record titled “You Can’t Kill What Never Dies”. Look for another new track titled “Enemy Of The People” to be leaked out within the next couple of weeks via the Tension* official website which also has links to all of their social media pages. In the meantime check out “11:34” from earlier this year by clicking HERE

Back in July of 2016 Hong Kong’s KING LY CHEE made a really good impression on myself and many others along the US East Coast as they flew in to open four dates in NYC, Boston, Philly and DC for Sick Of It All and Street Dogs. Within a year of those shows the band which got its start in 1999 had broken up with new bands being formed in the process. On December 27th King Ly Chee will play their first show in quite some time as they will be playing at Cult Key in HKG with openers Parallel Horizon and Sexy Hammer. King Ly Chee’s “classic” lineup that was together between 2001 through 2005 with Riz on vocals, Kevin on guitar, Andy on drums and Alex vocals/bass will all be on board with the band performing songs off of their “Stand Strong” album. No new music has been talked about or planned at this time but as with most things… time will tell. Make sure to also check out their 2014 music video for “Lost In A World” which is a great video that brought many of their old band members back to show that “once you were a member, you are always a member”.

BEYOND THE STYX from France released a new single titled “New World Disorder” which will be on their upcoming “Sentence” album due out on February 4th through WTF Records, Season Of Mist and Diorama Records. Click HERE to check out the new track which features Luis Ifer from Teething. “Sentence” will be Beyond The Styx’s third album.

INTRODUCING Z9!  NEW BAND FEATURING WISDOM IN CHAINS MEMBERS DEBUT "THE DEAD MAN"

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO "THE DEAD MAN" BY Z9!

Z9! Is a new project featuring three of the members of Wisdom In Chains with Richie Mancuso on guitar and vocals, Evan Ivkovich on bass and Luke Rota on drums. Their 6 song debut titled “We Don’t Come In Peace” drops October 29th on Fastbreak! Records. In Effect Hardcore caught up with Richie to get some details about the band and he was kind enough to also let us premiere one of their new songs titled “The Dead Man”. Find pre-order info and other merch for this release HERE.  Follow the band on Instagram HERE

“In the echo of a prophetic joke about a coming plague… in the sinister whispers of a passing fortune teller… in the shadows we catch moving in the corner of our eyes… to the ghosts haunting us from the cob webs of our minds. Z9! has come to represent a perfect circle, of a midnight black ballad, sung from the darkness of the cold streets in our hearts. After spending more than two decades in the trenches of hardcore, grinding his way to top billing on the worldwide stage - Richie “Krutch” Mancuso and backing members of Wisdom In Chains make no peace with their demons, but rather embrace their nightmares, and give those demons a voice. “We Don’t Come In Peace” represents the debut EP of a concept project which was written, produced and recorded by Richie Krutch - on his own terms and without compromise. With influences from some of the greatest 70’s and 80’s hard rock and street rock bands - Z9! has distinct East Coast grit that has been ground to a dangerously fine point, that represents an oath that was kept by an artist, to never be the victim… All while exploring an unknown chapter in the burned pages of their past”.

IE: Hey Richie. When did you start writing these Z9! songs and when did your Wisdom In Chains bandmates Evan and Luke come aboard?

Richie: Well, I’d say I started officially writing for this project in October of 2020. Halloween in Pennsylvania is a sacred time. The pandemic was in full effect and work with Wisdom In Chains was at a complete stand still. So I purchased some gear, started to figure out the recording and mixing side of things. I picked a style I wanted to go in, something I was interested in doing vocals over, because in the beginning of this project it was just me. I was showing Luke and Evan the stuff I was working on and they were like me in the sense that they have to write music… they need to play. They expressed that they really liked the stuff so I told them “If you guys want, jump in”. I could never do it like they do it on their instruments. They both listened to the songs, learned them, and then added their own elements. I love what they did with the bass and drums on these tracks.

IE: Your band description (that we included above) tells us about the 70’s and 80’s rock and street rock bands that influence Z9's sound. Can you put some names to that description?

Richie: So many influences, from Billy Idol, to Type-O-Negative, to Cocksparrer, Blood for Blood, Motley Crue. Melody is what brings it all together.

IE: With all three members of this band also playing in Wisdom In Chains it should be asked why these songs weren't written with that band in mind?

Richie: We, us 3, and Wisdom’s lead guitarist Mavvy The Baboon actually were in a writing zone! No lie, musically we had over 100 songs, but vocally, it was just not happening. Frustration was really building, so in September of 2020 we decided to halt it all and restart in 2021. By October I was bored as fuck… I need to write songs, so I started this project by myself, kind of just to scratch the itch. These songs probably could have went to Wisdom. Wisdom is all over the place musically… hardcore, Oi, metal, punk… we do whatever we want. But for Z9! I decided to have a more focused musical sound. I had about 12 songs for this project musically, but only 6 had lyrics. I scrapped the other 6 to just focus on these. I just wanted a finished product that I was happy with. The frustration from Wisdom was killing me as it’s been years since we wrote a song. I didn’t want that to happen again.

Z9! (From L-R; Evan, Luke, Richie)

IE: The band description also paints a dark picture to what you guys are calling a concept project with the album’s title and artwork helping build that feeling even more. It's not often that you see bands associated with the hardcore scene doing full on concepts. Can you talk more about the vibe going on here?

Richie: Well, like I said, this project started in October, and it will be released in October. The constant vibe was death, revenge, and conquest. The opening track is about winning, not surviving… fuck surviving, I’ll take what I want. The song “The Dead Man” is a unique perspective about being haunted by the ghost of the man you killed, and still not letting that dead man get one over on you. “A Million Years” is about taking advantage and figuring out how to make the hardest times work in your favor, inspired by the pandemic really. “The Lord Of Death” is just about me thinking about all the times I have escaped death so far in my life. I know it will get me eventually, but I cheated that fool a few times now. The last song “Gone” is just simply about death. We all deal with the loss of loved ones, and its finality is sickening, but so real. It’s like nothing else. Even the cover song I chose (“The One I Love” by R.E.M.)… it’s like this mainstream radio rock song, but lyrically, I liked how the lyrics were kind of selfish and fucked up. This is the theme for Z9!, other bands can sing about feeling depressed, and feeling sorry for themselves, or sing about being losers or whatever is going on. This shit is about the darkness, the cockiness, of the side of reality that isn’t very popular to mention in the current times we live in.

IE: What's the meaning behind the name Z9?

Richie: There are a few meanings, one meaning is for the band members personally and only they know. Another meaning comes from an old secret society I read about. They had code words and terms so they could speak freely to one another without outsiders knowing the details of what they said. They used the term Z9 to describe what they considered the most dangerous of people, someone who had nothing to lose.

AFTER A TWO YEAR GAP BETWEEN RELEASES EKULU ARE BACK WITH THEIR FIRST FULL LENGTH TITLED "UNSCREW MY HEAD". IN EFFECT CAUGHT UP WITH THEIR SINGER CHRIS & DRUMMER MIKE TO GET ALL THE DETAILS BEHIND IT AS WELL AS ASKING ABOUT WHAT'S ON TAP FOR THE REST OF 2021.

“UNSCREWING YOUR HEAD COULD BE BLOWING OFF STEAM DOING WHAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TO DO… WHETHER IT’S WRITING, SKATEBOARDING, MOSHING, MAKING ART, DRAWING, PLAYING SHOWS… IT’S THE WHOLE IDEA OF LETTING STRESS GO AND FINDING YOUR BLISS”.

QUICK HITS:

LONG RUNNING DIY VENUE "SKIDROW GARAGE" IN YORK, PA FORCED TO CLOSE AMID LEGAL ISSUES

Long running DIY venue SKIDROW GARAGE located in York, PA is NO MORE! This spot had been hosting shows for the past 12 years and was recently forced to close due to legal issues. MC Hyser who ran the spot out of his own garage also sings for the band Olde Tigers and in our 2018 interview had this to say about Skidrow Garage… “It started out as one show in our practice space to help our friends on tour and it’s become one of the best DIY venues on the East Coast. I emphasize: it is literally my garage. When shows aren’t happening, my car/motorcycle is parked there. But it’s a phenomenal venue if I do say so myself. PA’s liquor laws make it very hard for bars/venues to do all ages shows in this state, but I can offer that at the garage. We have had bands from all over the country and world (5 continents!) play shows here. Typing those words still blows my mind”.

Not accepting “defeat” MC has pledged to open a new Skidrow Garage as a legitimate venue in the York area and is asking the help of the South Central, PA punk scene and beyond to help him achieve that goal. A Go Fund Me page has been created to help offset the costs involved with putting together a new Skidrow Garage. “Any building that I find will need to be built to suit our needs. We will need to build a stage, storage rooms, update the wiring and plumbing, install fire suppression, and, of course, build a suitable sound system. This is on top of the rental costs of the building itself, utilities, legal fees, and insurance costs, as well as all the unforeseen expenses that are sure to arise”.

Find out more info about MC’s band Olde Tigers (as well as Skidrow Garage) by reading our July 2018 interview. For more info on Skidrow Garage’s current situation and how to donate to their cause visit their Go Fund Me page.

A limited edition three song demo will be released in the late summer on cassette and will be followed up by a five song EP that will also contain the demo tracks. The tracks were recorded in October 2020 at project Zero Studios in Belgium with Jerry A. doing his vocals at Dig Recording in Portland between March and July of this year. Today we bring you the premier of “Camello”; a new Crime Scene song that will be part of the upcoming demo. Click HERE to give it a listen. When asked about the lyrics for these new songs Jerry A. had this to say… “There is one theme throughout this whole thing, depression and death. I hope it doesn't rub off on anyone and works as therapy instead”. A previously released  track "Crime Scene" is also available to listen to now at the above link.

CHECKING IN WITH... NYC'S ENZIGURI

We want to take a moment to shine some light on NY’s ENZIGURI who have been a pretty active squad over the past year despite recent world events. Right now, they are writing new material, and working on a four song split 7” with Crippled Earn which will be out in the spring of next year. They also recently contributed the song “Stone Caster” to the “A7 Back To The New York Hardcore Roots” compilation which also comes with an accompanying music video through Stone Films. They also put out a music video for their track “Rat Race” last October. New merch including Enziguri snapback hats, t-shirts, shorts and pullover hoodies will go up for pre-order the week of September 6th. When we recently caught up with their fromtman Davey Hooligan he had this to say…“Even though the world is still being ravaged by COVID and though we are in the midst of the writing process, it's important for us to continue entertaining and looking forward to the future; whether it’s Europe or hopping on bigger shows in NYC”. Recent gigs have seen Enziguri play pop up shows on the streets of Brooklyn (see above photo), as well as the famed Niagra (A7 club) in Manhattan, with other stops in Westchester and most recently Long Island. Next up is an opening slot on October 22nd at The Kingsland in Brooklyn, NY where they will open for Sheer Terror and Slapshot.

GORDITA BEACH PREMIER "DROWN" OFF OF THEIR SELF-TITLED EP DUE OUT AUGUST 17TH

CLICK BELOW TO LISTEN!

Back in February we told you about GORDITA BEACH; a new band led by singer/song writer Derrick Karg-Zamudio of Savage Youth. In April of 2020, Derrick started writing and recording 7 songs on his own to “get out all the anger, sorrow and frustration I felt about what was going on in our shit show of a country”. Derrick was already friends with Breakdown/Killing Time guitarist Carl Porcaro and was showing him the progress as each song was completed. To make a long story short… Gordita Beach now consists of Derrick on vocals, Carl Porcaro on guitar, and Killing Time’s Chris Skowronski and Anthony Drago on bass and drums respectively. Now comes word that their debut EP will be released digitally on August 17th. It will contain seven songs that were recorded, mixed and mastered for digital by Brian DiMeglio in November/December of 2020 with the above mentioned lineup at Brooklyn Recording Paradise (formerly Cannon Sound Foundation). A special run of 200 pink vinyl 7”s have also been ordered mastered for vinyl by Jesse Cannon and are expected to be available in early 2022 with artwork done by Andrew Notsch. September 10th will be Gordita Beach’s first ever show opening for Total Meltdown, Loss Becomes and Husbandry at The Nest in Brooklyn, NY. “Drown” is one of the brand new tracks on the Gordita Beach EP and the band has been kind enough to offer this song a few days before its release. IN EFFECT A RECENT GUEST ON THE LOOSE MEAT PODCAST

We recently had the pleasure of being invited on to the LOOSE MEAT PODCAST to talk about our very own In Effect website as well as the recently released In Effect Anthology. We thank the Loose Meat duo for the publicity they gave us and to return the favor we asked them to give us a little background info for those of you out there just finding out about their show... we were provided with the following info as well as some killer Loose Meat/In Effect mashup artwork! Click HERE for an Apple Podcast link to the interview with In Effect's Chris Wynne.

"LOOSE MEAT is the world’s foremost podcast related to extreme music. That means hardcore, crust punk, power-violence, grindcore, garlic toast, harsh noise, and any other genre or subgenre of music that might get you kicked out of an Outback Steakhouse if you start playing it on your bluetooth speaker in the bathroom and asking the patrons if they “like to party”. The two hosts share their honest opinions on new releases which are either submitted by listeners or selected at random from a number of affiliated You Tube channels. They rave about the releases they like, and they exquisitely rip apart the ones that they don't.

Maybe you’re a die-hard fan of all the genres mentioned above, or maybe you hate them and want to understand how anyone could possibly enjoy listening to them, OR you are just a fan of fringe culture in general. Any way you shake it; Loose Meat is a top tier podcast for anyone who wants more weird, more noise, or more counter culture in their life. The hosts, Horrible Noise and Baby Chico have never met, and have been brought together entirely by a shared lust for extreme music that invariably and equally frightens parents, parrots, and potential lovers. Be sure to check out this hot mess of a podcast about hot messes of music. You won’t regret it. Actually you might regret it… some of this shit is weird as fuck!"

On August 26th HELLMINDED RECORDS will be releasing a complete discography from early 2000's Philly straight edge band ONE UP. QUICK HITS:

NY’s WAR BABIES sign with Hellminded Records… debut album due out this Fall. When Brooklyn’s Brain Slug were in need of a fill-in guitar player for a few shows in 2017, Darren Nanos (NYC Headhunters, Born Sinner, Survivalist, Brain Slug) put in the call to Mike DeLorenzo of Kill Your Idols, CR, Serpico, Enrage, and Celebrity Murders. After playing only a handful of shows together, the duo vowed to develop their own musical project but were met with a series of scheduling delays. When all other musical projects were halted due to Covid-19 in 2020, the two NYHC veterans realized those scheduling delays no longer existed and opted to use their quarantine experience as a way to develop something fresh, something that spoke of the current, volatile social and political climate, and something that blended their mutual love for late 80’s/early 90’s era powerviolence and bands such as Infest, NYC Mayhem, Crossed Out, and Spazz as well as classic NYHC acts such as Sick of It All and Killing Time.

The two-piece powerhouse, who coined the term “Quarantine Core” after their 2020 demo cassette share instrument duties which sees Mike D. on guitar and bass with Nanos holding it down on drums and vocals. Recording solo in their respective, remote locations and pairing those performances together digitally, the two NYHC stalwarts have made amazing use of the global pandemic with an already near-prolific output of more than 45+ songs in under a year and includes a demo, a forthcoming split 12” with The Great Lie and now a 23-song debut LP entitled "Shameless Imbalance", which is expected to drop early Fall 2021 on Hellminded Records. Check out War Babies' previously released music HERE.

Dutch band BACKFIRE! recently had a plaza named after their legendary deceased drummer Richie. The location is now called RichieBackfirePlein. Richard Bruinen (aka Richie Backfire) from Maastricht, Netherlands was a founding member of early European hardcore bands Right Direction and Backfire! He was well respected in the worldwide hardcore community. Backfire toured with Warzone and played hundreds of shows with the likes of Agnostic Front, Madball, Slapshot and many more. Sadly Richie passed away in 1999. “A new venue called Muziekgieterij (music foundry) for concerts, recording, art and culture was constructed in 2019 in Maastricht and the location was new so it needed a name” states Right Direction guitarist Maurice Gijsbers… “so the city of Maastricht came up with RichieBackfirePlein after seeing a documentary about Richard”. For more info on this cool honor click HERE. In the photo is Maastricht's own Maurice Gijsbers and Niene B. near the new venue.

ROLLIN' COFFIN is the brainchild of former Bloodsimple and Vision of Disorder frontman Tim Williams. The new band is poised to release their

debut single, “Runaway”, on April 2nd through Static Era Records. “Runaway” comes at you with a driving sound that is very different from the aggressive metal stylings that you would expect from Williams. The band pays homage to its early influences by using a blend of classic and indie garage rock that evokes a 90’s grunge feel with a modern alternative rock sound. Describing the motivations for the project, Williams says, "these songs are a stripped down version of myself, creatively, coming from an honest place. Sonically, I wanted to achieve a unique sound. A loose, almost dangerous, approach to a different chapter in my musical journey. Rollin' Coffin is the next chapter in the storied career of a musician who is constantly evolving. Every step in Williams' musical journey has been an interesting one. From his early days in the Long Island Hardcore scene through his time as a touring artist in a national heavy metal act, the path he takes with this new project is sure to be an interesting one.
