NEW BOOK: “STRAIGHT EDGE: A CLEAR-HEADED HARDCORE PUNK HISTORY”

SHARES EXCERPTS FROM THE CHAPTER "MORE THAN FASHION"

This month, Bazillion Points Publishing will be releasing Tony Rettman’s third book, “Straight Edge: A Clear-Headed Hardcore Punk History”. The book traces the history of the sober lifestyle throughout its entire time in the hardcore scene from the early 1980’s to the present day. Much like his previous books “Why Be Something You’re Not - Detroit Hardcore 1979-85” and “NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980 – 1990”, it is in the oral history format. In Effect HC is proud to show off a sneak peek from the book from the chapter entitled “More Than Fashion”. Read on as everyone from Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat to Pat Flynn from Have Heart dissect the style of dress adorned by Straight Edge kids worldwide. Ordering info for Tony’s new book can be found HERE. A NYC book launch is planned on November 9th in lower Manhattan at Sonos Store. Info on that event can be found by clciking HERE

Ian MacKaye (Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Skewbald, Embrace, Fugazi, The Evens): While it might be true straight edge as a brand or a look or aesthetic or philosophy was taken from the Boston model, I also think it’s true that the idea I had to sing about my own life and the right to make my own decisions resonated with far more people. Some may call what we did straight edge and some may not. But it’s not something you can get out of a box. You gotta make it yourself.

Ray Cappo (Violent Children, Youth of Today, Shelter, Better Than A Thousand): When you think about it, we were figuring out the concept of branding before we even knew what it was. I remember being in a club in East Germany, and seeing all these kids wearing Revelation Records T-shirts. They looked they could have been from New York City circa 1986, but this was in 1995! That’s when I realized, “Oh my god! We created a whole fashion and culture.” We never thought it was going to become that. It wasn’t that sophisticated. It was very grassroots and homegrown. We did it because it was a cool time with cool music and cool people.

Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits, Underdog, CIV, World Be Free): Fashion played a huge role, which is funny for a scene so vocally anti-fashion. For better or worse, my friends and I created the “Youth Crew” look. I remember going down to Orchard Street on the Lower East Side with Walter Schreifels and Porcell, because we had found a wholesaler who sold letterman jackets with fake leather sleeves; we were all vegetarian and trying not to wear leather.

Tim McMahon (Mouthpiece, Hands Tied, Face The Enemy, Triple Threat, Search): Personally, I could never relate to the punk aesthetic. Combat boots, ripped-up bleached jeans, leather studded jackets, Mohawks...that kind of look was not something that spoke to me or that I felt comfortable wearing. It looked more like a costume than a practical way of dress.

Dave Smalley (DYS, Dag Nasty, ALL, Down By Law, Don’t Sleep): One thing definitely characterized the Boston Crew; we didn’t feel we had to dress like Sid Vicious to be who we were. We wore leather jackets, but they look badass, and it was fucking cold in the winter in Boston. It wasn’t a fashion thing. But I would wear a hoodie with shorts because it fit for skateboarding; a look came from that.

Jack “Choke” Kelly (Negative FX, Last Rights, Slapshot, Stars & Stripes): I credit DYS for the whole Youth Crew look—that uniform with the hoodies and the skater shorts. Look at the back cover of Brotherhood, that’s what they’re all wearing. There’s no question.

Jeff Terranova (Up Front): If you look at any subgenre of music, there’s always a look. If you look at footage from a Blue Oyster Cult concert from 1977, everybody looks the same. The same goes for any music genre, either underground or mainstream. Madonna made that really apparent in the ‘80s. Every girl in high school dressed like Madonna. I think people just take to what makes them feel comfortable. And if you’re buying all these straight edge records, you’re going to start looking like a straight edge kid. That just comes with the territory; it’s nonconformity through conformity.

Pat Flynn (Have Heart, Clear, Sweet Jesus, Free): When I rocked that look in the early 2000s, I wanted to represent my affinity for the late ‘80s hardcore scene. I’m sure people thought I was like some weird Back to the Future case when I’d roll off to shows wearing a Crippled Youth shirt or something. Invariably, fashion does play its role in everything. So I’m sure the ever-changing understanding of what it means to look straight edge has played its role in its continued existence. But I hope to hell that straight edge has not continued to exist because of its look. That’d be just about the saddest reality for something that I personally perceived had virtually nothing to do with aesthetics at all.

MADBALL GUITARIST BRIAN "MITTS" DANIELS LEAVES BAND AFTER 16 YEAR RUN

MADBALL guitarist Brian “Mitts” Daniels announced earlier this week that after a 16 year run with the band that he would be leaving Madball. No word as of yet on a possible replacement or how this effects their new album which is currently in full swing in the writing process. European dates in November are still on as well.  Below is what Mitts had to say.

“It is with very heavy emotion that I would like to announce that my time with Madball has come to an end. Over the past 16+ years with this band, I’ve been lucky enough to fulfill almost every dream that a musician could ever have. I’ve gotten to travel the globe, made 4 LP’s, 3 EP’s, shared stages with heroes of my childhood. The friendships I’ve made with all of you, from here and around the world, are priceless. Most importantly, I would like to thank my bandmates, Freddy, Hoya, Mike, as well as past members Matt, Rigg, Ben, Mackie, Raj. It’s truly been an honor to share the stage with you all.

With regards to reasons why, I ask that you respect our privacy. The only thing anyone needs to know is that we all still remain on great terms. I have always, and will forever consider these guys my brothers, and I wish them all the best going forward from here. I have no doubt that they will continue to crush it for many years to come. Look out for “For The Cause” in 2018!!

As for my future, I am by NO means retiring, or hanging up my guitar. I’ve been playing music since I was 10 years old, and I have no intentions on stopping. As well as playing, I will continue to produce bands, something that I’m very passionate about. For every bit of sadness I have from closing the Madball chapter of my life, I am also very excited and looking forward to new ventures and opportunities in music. See you all soon!!” -Brian "Mitts" Daniels

IN EFFECT HARDCORE'S JOSH DERR TAKES TO THE PARKING LOTS OF THE THIS IS HARDCORE FEST IN PHILADELPHIA TO GET THE "WORD ON THE STREET"... VIDEO RUN TIME 17:17. CLICK PHOTO TO WATCH

Graphics by: Bas Spierings

For 10 plus years now, Philadelphia has played home to the hardcore music scene's annual summer camp – This Is Hardcore Fest. With 60+ bands on the bill, dozens of vendors, food trucks, and a tent housing brutish dudes in armor smashing each other with actual battle axes, TIHC really is in a league all of its own.

Amidst the chaos there were a few sets I saw that stood out; Jukai, Clearview, Code Orange, Dissent – but for me, Risk It! from Germany really put it down. Although I had minimal exposure to them previously, the energy they brought on stage coupled with their rolling, punched up style made me an instant fan. For me, it's being able to check out so many bands from all over in such a compacted time and space that really sets TIHC apart. Sure the sno-cones and vegan Korean sandwiches are nice, but the single thing that each of the thousands of fest goers have in common is the music – so we gather to see our favorite bands and hopefully find some new ones.

TIHC is something that needs to be experienced in order to understand the scope of the whole thing. I mean, where the hell else can you see armor clad warriors beat each other with maces, watch Martyr AD play a killer set then get legit BBQ brisket from a truck? Nowhere. –Josh Derr; Sept, 2017.

REST IN PEACE MAX MOYA:

GUITARIST FOR PHILADELPHIA’S EATEN ALIVE

EATEN ALIVE had this to say about their friend:

“Most of you have probably heard that our guitar player Max Moya died suddenly and randomly on September 15th. We have been at a loss for words.

Max was our friend and brother. We have each played music with Max for years. Frontline (’96), Heidnik (’99), The Revenge (’05), he even did gang vocals on the Kingdom demo (’06). Eaten Alive didn’t form in hopes of becoming a successful band, Eaten Alive formed as group of old friends who wanted to write and play hardcore together. Every week we laughed. We wrote songs that no one will ever love more than we do. We wrote this album and put everything we had into it. Every great riff. Every dumb idea. Our friends Joe McKay and Chris Striegel laid guest vocals, and Jotham Oliver of Wisdom in Chains did a guest track as well. We fucking love it. Max loved it. We named it “Masterpiece of Ignorance”.

Eaten Alive will not continue as a band. Despite this, the amazing people at Fast Break! Records are releasing “Masterpiece Of Ignorance” in Max's memory. We offer the Masterpiece so you can hear what 5 friends created together in a practice space in the Harrowgate/Port Richmond section of Philly, laughing, joking, bickering, sweating. The profits from the album and pre-orders will go directly to Max’s family. All merch sales will go directly to them as well.

We will miss Max Moya for the rest of our lives, and feel very lucky to have been able to spend the last two years doing this band with him. We all feel that a piece of us is gone and will never be replaced. We are grateful to everyone who supported us, and also to everyone who has donated to Max’s GoFundMe, or raised money for his family”. Click the “Masterpiece Of Ignorance” cover art to order and scroll down within that page to hear two new tracks as well. In addition a Go Fund Me page which was initially set up for medical expenses and now being used for funeral expenses is still up and taking donations. Click HERE for more info.

NEW ROGER MIRET BOOK OUT THIS AUGUST

Coming this August is a new book by Jon Wiederhorn titled “My Riot, Agnostic Front, Grit, Guts & Glory” telling the story of AF’s ROGER MIRET. Below is the description…

Gangs of New York meets Mean Streets in this brutally honest memoir about surviving the treacherous 1980s Lower East Side and finding refuge and a voice in music.

Filled with danger, drugs, and abrasive music, “My Riot” is the definitive insider account of the volatile New York hardcore scene of the early 1980s. With Roger Miret as front man, legendary band Agnostic Front’s focused fury and aggression defined the times and continue to resonate today.

Born in Cuba, Roger Miret fled with his family to the US to escape the Castro regime. Through vivid language and graphic details, Miret recounts growing up in a strange new land with a tyrannical, abusive stepfather and the roles that poverty and violence played in shaping the toughness that became critical to his survival. In his teen years, he finds himself squatting in abandoned buildings with other runaways and victims of similar childhood trauma. Soon he becomes a respected and feared kingpin of the scene, and a protector of its misfits and outcasts.

Miret’s gripping memoir is a testament to the perils of growing up too young too fast and finding redemption through sheer strength, perseverance, and courage. Pre-orders can be found by visiting Amazon.com.

KNUCKLEDUST are the focal point of a new short 3 minute film by “The New British” featuring the band and fellow members of the London Hardcore scene. Click HERE to see it for yourself.
