QUICK HITS FROM THE UNDERGROUND:

In Effect Hardcore (the website) had its start in 1988 as a print fanzine that went under the name In Effect Fanzine. Over its on again, off again run (that ended in 1999) 12 issues were produced that covered the NYHC scene with many of the same attributes that you see on this very website today. Issue #1 ran off just 50 copies while issue #12 ran off 10,000. Many of the earlier issues sold out shortly after they were released and over the years there have been numerous requests for reproductions of the long sold out issues. We would like to officially announce that we are teaming up with SHINING LIFE PRESS to produce an In Effect Fanzine Anthology. John Scharbach who operates Shining Life Press with his friend Zack Wuerthner had this to say…

“We are real excited to be working with Chris on collecting all 12 issues of In Effect Fanzine. One of the best and most comprehensive zines from NYC that supported and championed the real deal for years and still does. Chris lives and breathes hardcore and this anthology will reflect that. We are hoping to get it done by the end of the year”. Click HERE to see some of Shining Life’s featured products.

In other Upstate news the COVID lockdown has spawned a NJ/PA band called DEATHSTARE. Featuring members of God Tier, Grievance, Rest In Piss, Dissent and Years Spent Cold… look for new music dropping at the end of the summer 2020.

Lastly, Upstate Records would like to acknowledge the passing of a dear friend, CHRIS FOLLMER, drummer for Chicago’s PENITENTIARY and wish to extend their sincerest condolences to the Follmer Family. Donations to the Follmer family can be made through the Upstate Records website. All proceeds go directly to Chris’s family.

CRO-MAGS have premiered a new music video for the single, “From The Grave,” featuring former Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell. The band’s first full-length album in 20 years, “In The Beginning”, will be available June 19th on Mission Two Entertainment. Click the graphic to the left to watch "From The Grave".

“The idea for the video is that I'm rising from the grave and going on a mission... like I came back from the dead to become the grim reaper himself,” explains Cro-Mags founder, bassist and vocalist Harley Flanagan on the clip. “I think anybody who knows the history of this band and my life will get it. It starts at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, where I will be buried with my family and in-laws. In the opening shot, the grave I'm in front of is actually my mothers.”

SILENCE EQUALS DEATH have kept busy in recent weeks as they have just finished tracking their new 12 song full length which is tentatively titled “I’ll See You On The Other Side”. The tracking process was an in house project as both their singer (Scott) and guitarist (Wade) have home studios. Doug Gallo with AGL Sounds in Cherry Hill, NJ will handle the mixing and mastering which just got underway. Label and release date to be determined. Track listing is as follows: “Revolution Rising”, “Switch”, “Sometimes Dead Is Better”, “Traitor”, “Our Place In Time”,  “Keep Trying”, “Signals”,  “No More Ashes”,  “Ghost”,  “Plague”,  “The Killing Floor “, “Pass The Torch”. The tracks “No More Ashes”, “Ghost” and “Plague” are previously released and/or compilation tracks that SED re-recorded for this release. Back in 2018 the band put out a video for the song “Plague”, check it out HERE

NY’s BASTARD CLAN have just released two new songs which can be streamed and/or downloaded for free via their Bandcamp page. Here is what the band had to say about this new recording…

“While on lockdown in our homes during the 2020/Covid-19 virus outbreak, Bastard Clan began working on songs that were inspired by our current state of mind. Johnny Kray (vocals) came forward with some dystopian lyrics and some riffs to Taras (guitar) and the spark was ignited that fueled these songs. Not being able to access our studio, we individually recorded our instruments in our homes, sending our tracks for Taras to mix in his home studio. After a lot of online work and conferencing, these two resulting tracks emerged. We are extremely happy to still be able to create during these difficult times and we hope they help you blow off a little steam while we are trapped in our homes”.

After releasing four EP’s since their start back in 2008, NY’s REBELMATIC have completed their 10 song debut full length titled “Ghost In The Shadows” which will be put out by Red Right Recordings which is run by Taking Back Sundays Mark O’Connell (who also produced the new record). The May release date for this album is currently on hold due to Covid-19 concerns but when it is released you will be able to find it on 12” vinyl as well as cassette. In the meantime check out the 2017 interview In Effect did with the band HERE or the live television performance they did on the Chris Gethard show (also in 2017) HERE

SAND AND SALT out of Tarifa, Spain (right on the Straight of Gibraltar… look it up on a map!) just sent in an interesting double EP release. First up is their five song “Thrive” EP which they dubbed as “furious and posi-youth hardcore” which is followed by another five song EP titled “All The Good Things” which they describe as “fresh and melodic punk”. Both EP’s were released on April 20th and the fact that they play variations of punk rock music on both that were released on the same day is a first for me. Look for a review of this band on this site soon. Check out both releases HERE

Richmond, VA’s STRIKE ANYWHERE have signed to Pure Noise Records and have announced the band's first new music since 2009. “Nightmares Of The West” will be released on July 17th, 2020. Two of the seven tracks are available to checkout now on You Tube. First up is “Dress The Wounds” followed by “Imperium Of Waste”. Within the seven song album is a cover of “Opener” by Blocko from London. Pre-orders are available HERE.

"We wanted to write things that we felt really fresh about and that revealed something new," explains vocalist Thomas Barnett. "It was almost like this refresh, this restart, where we found ways to write songs that not only moved us, but also reflected the times and our ages. But we definitely feel inspired, and this record is a platform for us to hopefully - in time - play shows, connect with community, and help keep those little fires lit in ourselves and in others through the music and those shared experiences. These songs are the conversations that we want to have and the feelings that we still really need to share."

JOE HARDCORE WITH THE LATEST ON THE THIS IS HARDCORE FEST 2020...

Way back on March 30th of 2016 “The New Breed Documentary” made its live debut with a showing at the small Nitehawk Cinemas in Brooklyn, NY. At the time there was talk of a DVD version of this documentary but it never came to be. We have not updated our news section in well over a month and didn’t want to miss the chance to let everyone know that you can now view this documentary FOR FREE on You Tube as it was released there on March 31st. The cassette compilation which this documentary chronicles was released in 1989. You can listen to a You Tube version of the compilation HERE. Below is a self-description of the documentary which runs 1 hour and 9 minutes long. Click HERE to watch the doc.

The New Breed Documentary chronicles a cassette compilation put out by Freddy Alva and Chaka Malik in 1989. New York Hardcore was undergoing a transition at the end of the 80's and this generational shift was exemplified by the bands that were featured on the compilation. The story of the tape is at the heart of the story of NYC and kids that grew up in its five boroughs as well as related outposts in Long Island/Yonkers. A unique set of social/economic circumstances during the 70's and 80's forged the individuals that went on to make up the New York Hardcore scene. This full length documentary profiles band members/fanzine editors/record label heads and fans that made up this vibrant scene with narration by NYHC book author Tony Rettman. It's unheard of for a feature film to focus on an outdated analog format like a cassette compilation but it is through the eyes of these individuals that a spotlight is shined onto those tumultuous times and what is ultimately a tribute to a bygone era. Director: John Woods Editor: Orlando Arce.

20 QUESTIONS WITH AGNOSTIC FRONT AND LONG TIME NYHC SCENE DRUMMER POKEY MO

"My time with AF has been tremendous. I feel like everything I’ve done in the past was just preparing me for this. I’ve played more shows with this band in the past ten plus years than I have the previous twenty".

QUICK HITS & NEWS FROM THE UNDERGROUND...

Back in August of last year came word of an upcoming book by Howie Abrams titled "THE BLOOD AND THE SWEAT: THE STORY OF SICK OF IT ALL’S KOLLER BROTHERS”.  Fast forward to February 2020 and things are moving along as this past week saw the books cover make its first online appearance as well as pre-orders which can be found through AMAZON or BARNES & NOBLE. Howie was kind enough to share a little slice of the new book by giving us part of the “Just Smack Those Kids Already” chapter where Lou, Pete (among others) have a live on the air radio “debate” with members of Born Against who were not fans of Sick Of It All’s signing with In Effect Records. For the audio of this infamous radio interview (courtesy of Set You Straight 1988) click HERE.

Lou: When that stupid debate happened on WNYU, one of those kids commented, “You could have done your own thing with Sick of It All, but what do you have now? Just some fancy jackets.” We thought, your reason for hating us is because we got JACKETS from our record label??? That's your problem, that we got jackets?! That fucking debate…. It was the singer of Born Against and two kids from some fanzine; I can't remember their names, but they were generally nice kids. I never really knew the guy from Born Against, but I knew the kids from that fanzine and the kid who ended up drumming for Born Against; he does sound all over New York now and works for the Bouncing Souls a lot. The thing that got me really mad was not that they hated us for “selling out”; it’s that they had been our friends and somehow couldn't just come up and talk to us about this and have a normal discussion. They had to attack us with the “Alleyway Crüe” photo and all this stupid shit. The debate was just idiotic. I remember all the phone calls that were coming into the station while it was going on. People were saying, “Just shut up and play music! Who cares what label they're on?!”

Bill Florio: When that debate was happening, I was at band practice and was basically told not to walk down University Place, where the radio station was. They told me that Lou and Pete were trying to find out who the Smashin’ Throughguy was.

Pete: Nobody cared about it. Anthony Comunale called up and said, “Just smack those kids already,” and he was friends with them too. He almost formed a band with some of them. For us, it wasn't super serious. I think we all just let it explode. I just wanted it to leave. We’re not tough guys, but if you keep messing with us, and we get pushed too much, you can't be a sucker.

Lou: It kept going on and on and on. Towards the end, I remember someone going, “All right, it's over,” and we all started screaming. As we were leaving, I turned to that kid John and said, “This is fucked up! You were my friend, man, what the fuck?” He just sat there with this weird smile on his face. I got mad and shoved him, and he fell over a chair. Everybody was like, “Oh man, Sick of It All just attacked the guy.” No, we didn't, and I even apologized to him. It's funny because he and I laugh about it now. Like with everything in life, later on you feel differently. When we left and got downstairs, the two kids from the fanzine were there, and I asked, “Hey, where's that guy from Born Against?” They told us, “Oh, he ran away. He and his girl jumped in a cab because they thought you were gonna kick his ass.” I was like, “We're not gonna beat anybody up,” and he said, “We know that.” That's when they actually gave us their whole reasoning behind their bullshit: “You guys could have been the Minor Threat of New York Hardcore. You could have started your own label. Just think what you could have done.” I replied to them, “Maybe we could have, but we WORK jobs to earn a living. We do this band, and then we come home after a weekend of shows early on a Monday morning, put our equipment away, and return the rental van at 4 a.m. Then we go home, most of the time not even going to sleep, and then at 6 a.m. we go right to fucking work!” That's what we did for YEARS, and they're gonna tell me I'm gonna run a record label in the middle of all that?!  Alleyway photo by: BJ Papas.

Too Many Voices is a five piece melodic hardcore band featuring veterans from the Long Island and New York City punk and hardcore scene with a laundry list of previous bands that embraces its past while creating music for the present and looking towards the future. Combining those NYHC influences with the melodic hardcore that sprang from the Revolution Summer movement of the Washington DC hardcore punk scene, Too Many Voices looks to move forward with something new… music with an edge and melody… music that bites and music that moves. Music for those who know that you can't outgrow the youthful spirit and inspiration of hardcore if you don't let it and combine it with wisdom of age. REST IN PEACE VINNIE VALUE

Earlier this week came tragic news that Vinnie "Value" Verga had passed away. Many know or recognize Vinnie from playing drums in No Redeeming Social Value, Warzone, Grey Area, Kill Your Idols and a few more as well. This particular post is difficult for me as I have known and been friends with Vinnie for close to 30 years. With the routes we chose in life and our musical tastes it was almost inevitable that we would cross paths and become friends... which is probably true in many other cases of those who knew him. Vinnie was from Valley Stream, NY and although I'm not from there I had many recent occasions where I would run into him in that area. One time was on the train platform, another at Trader Joe's, another at a show I didn't know he was putting on and another while I was walking to the post office and him and his kid were being evacuated from a doctor's office due to a false fire alarm. With fire trucks and an entire building of people all around us he tells me "this is like the third time they are kicking us out for these false alarms, we're just going home!" My father in law (who is in his mid-60's) often wears his In Effect Hardcore t-shirts out and about and one time he came to me and says "some guy Vinnie Value says hello". Vinnie obviously was a very outgoing guy, everyone loves Vinnie. The last time I saw Vinnie was at the January 11th Killing Time show in Amityville. We looked at old tour photos on Glen's (current No Redeeming Social Value drummer) phone, had some laughs and shared stories. Vinnie wanted to know what bands I listen to these days outside of hardcore music. Later on I saw pictures from the show and saw a few with Vinnie in the crowd singing along, fist pumped and singing right alongside KT's Anthony Comunale. How could I or any of us there have known that it would be the last time we'd get to hang out. I am grateful to have made it out to that show and to have that interaction with him that night as it is my final memory and one that I will hold on to. Below is a photo (by Danielle Dombrowski) from that Killing Time show, Vinnie is on the stage with the dark cap, chain and t-shirt... Rest easy my friend. Your memory will always be with us.

Mark enlisted fellow Darkside NYC members Rich O’Brien (vocals) and Rick Beenders (drums) to each play a drum track on the new EP which was recorded in (Darkside NYC's guitarist) Matt's cellar. We asked Mark to give us a little more about the band and the recording process and this is what he gave us…

“The guitars were recorded in Ireland, the vocals, bass guitars and drums were recorded in Queens and the EP was mixed and engineered in Maryland! I had three drummers come record tracks for four different songs in the span of seven days. I am either a magician or a masochist! Longtime friend Ty Canon (the EP's artist) also played all of the guitar tracks and contributed a six-string bass track for a song called “Anthroapology”. We are calling this genre "Cave Metal". Turn it up!” CHAKA has a one-stop shop: a dedicated website for streaming/downloading or buying the physical release. Click HERE to check it out.

NEW CRO-MAGS EP OUT DECEMBER 6TH

The Harley Flanagan led CRO-MAGS have released the title track to an upcoming 3 song EP on Victory Records titled “From The Grave” which will be out in its entirety on December 6th. The title track features guitar duties from Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell.

On the new EP’s title Flanagan explains: “Lemmy (Kilmister, Motorhead) came to me in a dream and said “Take it back mate, it's yours, you started it” (referring to the band’s name). I woke up and I knew what had to be done, so I did it. And I figured since Lemmy gave me my marching orders, I should get his guitarist to play on a new track. Phil immediately said yes and that is why it's called “From The Grave” and I'm so honored to have him on this song. I first met Phil when we toured with Motorhead on the “Orgasmatron” tour. He is one of my favorite guitarists of all time and I still can't believe I have him playing on one of my songs. Thank you Phil and thank you Lemmy for making this all happen!”

Campbell adds, “It was a great surprise to hear from Harley after so many years. We hung out a lot during the tour in the eighties. When I heard the track he wanted me to do, I just had to do it. Listen for yourselves!” In addition to a digital release, a 7 inch (with 2 additional songs) will be released December 6 with 4 different color variants. Check out the track “From The Grave” by clicking HERE.

REST IN PEACE to NYHC pioneer JACK FLANAGAN who passed away on October 12th. Flanagan’s NY music roots date back to bands like Heart Attack and The Mob who were extremely influential in the early stages of the hardcore scene. In more recent times Flanagan managed both Clutch and GWAR.

In Tony Rettman’s 2014 book titled “NYHC- New York Hardcore 1980-1990” there are some great interview quotes from Jack and his bandmate from the Mob Ralph Gebbia. Read some excerpts from that book below...

Ralphie G: I first met Jack Flanagan at Elmjack Little league at about twelve years old. We were both new to the Jackson Heights area and we became inseparable for years. Me, Jack, and another buddy took group guitar lessons, Jack progressed much quicker than me and the other guy. So he continued and we dropped out. Once Jack felt comfortable, he answered an ad he saw in a record store. I believe the ad said something like: “World’s Youngest Punk Band Looking For Guitar Player”. It was actually Heart Attack with Jesse Malin and some other kids from Whitestone, Queens.

Jack rehearsed and played with Heart Attack for maybe a year, with Jose and I never far behind taunting Jack and them the whole way. The truth is, we were probably jealous and wanted to be doing it too. We convinced Jackie that Heart Attack wasn’t where it was at, and it was time to put the Mob in action.

Jack Flanagan: (On the Mob) We were genuine. We were four guys from Queens and we didn’t hide it. Being genuine was a big piece of the puzzle. If you weren’t genuine in the hardcore scene, it got noticed pretty quick. I don’t think you would show up for a second show, you know what I mean?

Detroit’s SMASH YOUR ENEMIES will be releasing a 6 song EP titled “Become Death” on October 30th on Upstate Records. “Born from the lineage of Detroit’s Cold As Life” was an eye catcher while reading their press kit info which also used words like brutal, fury and violence to describe the band while also going on to say that their sound is for fans of Madball and Slayer. Some tough shoes to fill to say the least. Check out the brutal title track for the “Become Death” EP by clicking on the cover art to the left.

QUICK HITS:

AF REVEALS THE ARTWORK TO THEIR UPCOMING ALBUM, DEBUTS A NEW TRACK, INSIGHT ON THE "GET LOUD" COVER FROM ARTIST SEAN TAGGART & MORE!

As we told you in our last update AGNOSTIC FRONT have a new 14 track album due out on November 8th titled “Get Loud”. The band is now in full swing with promoting their upcoming release and have put out a lyric video for the new track titled “Spray Painted Walls” which you can check out HERE. The new AF will be released on Nuclear Blast Records and in addition to this new full length album Bridge Nine Records will be releasing a limited edition 3 song EP titled “I Remember”. The B9 EP will have the tracks “I Remember” and “Get Loud” (which also will be on the Nuclear Blast full length) as well as the track “Your Gonna Pay” which is exclusive to the B9 release. Listen to “You're Gonna Pay” HERE and find the pre-orders for the Bridge Nine Release HERE.

The “Get Loud” album artwork was done by legendary NY artist SEAN TAGGART who has worked with the band before, most notably on their 1986 release “Cause For Alarm”. In Effect caught up with Sean to get a little more insight on how things came together on this new project and this is what he had to say…

“So, out of the blue I get a message from Roger saying they’d like me to do the next album cover and would I be interested. Hell yeah! You don’t have to ask me twice. Roger wanted the skinhead demon to be the main focus, and to give the Mohawk dude from the first one the pit bull from the Eliminator Tour. I did one better, a two headed pit bull! The fun part was adding all the details, my favorite being the old school subway token used as a gauge in the green haired punk’s ear. It was like visiting old friends, if you look you’ll see a bunch.”

The “Get Loud” track listing is as follows: “Spray Painted Walls”, “Anti-Social”, “Get Loud!”, “Conquer And Divide”, “I Remember”, “Dead Silence”,  “AF Stomp”, “Urban Decay”, “Snitches Get Stitches”, “Isolated”, “In My Blood”, “Attention”, “Pull The Trigger”, “Devastated”.

On September 18th Agnostic Front kicks off a 17 date/19 day tour of the Eastern U.S. and Canada with Prong starting in St Louis on the 18th and winding back up in NYC on October 6th. A 5 date West Coast run (also with Prong) starts off on October 23rd in Denver and runs through the 27th in Garden Grove, CA. In addition a December run of shows with Slapshot is also planned for the Southeast U.S. starting on December 3rd in Richmond, VA and ending on December 10th in Wilmington, NC with mid-January seeing AF hit Europe on the 2020 Persistence Tour.
