NEW INTERVIEW WITH NYHC OG AND MURPHY'S LAW FOUNDING MEMBER "UNCLE AL"

On Murphy's Law's first show on New Year's 1982...  "...we jumped on stage just at midnight . Jimmy yelled into the mic ''Yo, we're Murphy’s Law, and this is called Fun!'' and the whole place went nuts. Everyone attacked the stage, diving, piling on, people started tearing up the foam seat cushions, turning the place into a foam blizzard. After two songs there were so many people on the two foot high stage that it collapsed, but we kept playing. Finally, when we were done, the owner of the place came running up to us and we thought he was going to throw us out, but instead he said 'You guys wanna play here next week?''

IN EFFECT'S JOSH DERR CATCHES UP WITH FREDDY MADBALL IN THIS EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW

CLICK PHOTO TO WATCH

Having just come off a 6 date run of shows with Korn and Limp Bizkit in the UK, the guys in Madball are no worse for wear. They returned to the states for limited down time before shoving out to play a few East Coast shows with Wisdom in Chains and Brick By Brick. I was able to catch up with Madball vocalist Freddy Cricien in the green room after their set where we talked about how they ended up in Wembley Arena with two of pop culture's most recognizable rock bands, Madball's upcoming split with Wisdom in Chains, and what it was like playing in front of a huge crowd that was, for the most part, totally unfamiliar with their music. Check it out!

THE "KINGS OF PUNK" POISON IDEA BREAK UP

POISON IDEA announced on January 8th that they are breaking up after over 35 years in the game. We salute Jerry and the members of PI past and present for a job well done. The comeback that Poison Idea started a few years back was no half-assed effort with some quality music having been put out since their return. Their official announcement came via Facebook and it went like this…

“This is an OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. We've told our friends, talked with promoters, announced it at the last show, but I guess we have to do this to make it "official". POISON IDEA is pulling the plug on the life support system that keeps the band side alive. Ya can't kill the spirit. But as of Jan. 1, 2017, POISON IDEA is no longer a band. We're going to keep working with TKO/Cascade to rerelease the old catalog and we have stuff that was never let out of the can, that will probably be released. THANK YOU FOR THE 35(!) YEARS WORTH OF MEMORIES. STAY TRUE, STAY FREE. CHEERS.”   Above photo taken at CBGB's and taken by Mr. Carl Gunhouse.

REST IN PEACE... JOHN SALTARELLI & DAVE FRANKLIN

Sad news over the last couple of weeks first with the passing of LETHAL AGGRESSION frontman John “Saltz” Saltarelli on December 23rd. He was 51 years old. NJ’s Lethal Aggression got things rolling in 1985 with their “From The Cunt Of The Fucking Whore” demo which introduced them and their crossover thrash/punk style to the NY/NJ crowd and beyond. Lethal Aggression was still at it as well in 2016. R.I.P. John.

On January 5th word got around that Dave Franklin, frontman of NJ’s VISION had also passed at the age of 47. Vision who have been at it since the late 1980’s have always been one of those bands that seemed to draw people into what they were doing no matter what style of hardcore/punk or metal you were into. R.I.P. Dave.

R.I.P. MICKY FITZ OF THE BUSINESS

As many of you have probably already heard Micky Fitz of The Business passed away on December 1st. The band’s Facebook page had the following post:

As you may have already heard, Micky passed away yesterday morning after a long battle with cancer. Micky was a man who spoke his mind - he was always quick with a joke and three steps ahead of you in a conversation. He was also one of the best mates you could ask for. Everybody you speak to in the punk scene has their own Micky Fitz story, some of them more flattering than others as Mick didn’t pull any punches. He didn’t care what anybody thought of him and he always did things his own way. That is the thing about true characters - they have rough edges, they don’t fit into any box and they can be near impossible to deal with from time to time, but that’s what makes them so unique, it’s what makes them iconic, it’s what makes them special. There will never be another Micky Fitz. Our thoughts are with Mick’s family at this time, especially Kim and Jamie who have always been by his side through thick and thin. Finally thank you to Micky, for being relentlessly Micky Fitz, much loved and much missed. Micky has requested no flowers. If you would like to do something to remember him, please make a donation to Cancer Research in his name. CLICK HERE

The “Kings Of Punk” POISON IDEA recently put out a 1 and a half minute trailer to a “feature full length with lots of music and words from filmmaker Mike Lastra”. Lead singer Tom Pimlott says that the band members are all still friends and will remain playing together in other projects. “We just feel the band has run its course is all. Rather go out with a bang than fizzle out”. Violent Reaction holds the honor of being the first non-US band to put out a full length album on Revelation Records. Back in June of 2015 In Effect did an interview with them which you can check out HERE

BAD BRAINS ROCK 'N ROLL HALL OF FAME NOMINATED AS WELL AS NEW H.R. BOOK DUE OUT IN JANUARY

BAD BRAINS recently were recently nominated to be inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall Of Fame. There is a 2017 nominee fan vote that you can find at:

https://vote.rockhall.com that can help their cause as well. In addition be on the lookout for a new book titled “Finding Joseph I: An Oral History of H.R. from Bad Brains” which is due out in January 2017. The 272-page gripping story features interviews with H.R., his bandmates past and present, friends and those he has influenced and inspired. Lesser Gods Books who is behind this effort dubbed it the “first fully authorized biography” of Bad Brains’ frontman Paul “HR” Hudson. The book is a companion to an upcoming documentary film from James Lathos who along with Howie Abrams authored the “Finding Joseph I” book. The documentary promises to put many of the stories from the biography into moving pictures and will make its debut at London’s Doc and Roll Film Festival on November 10th. Co-author Howie Abrams was kind of enough to share 2 short passages from the book which you can read below, first from Minor Threat’s Ian Mackaye and then from HR. Pre-order information about the book can be found HERE

IAN MACKAYE

“Bob Marley and other reggae guys would talk about, “mash it up.” It was a reggae kind of saying. This is a ridiculous theory of mine, but I think H.R. probably said “mash it up,” but because of his accent, which had this Rasta inflection, the New York kids heard, “MOSH it up,” and their dancing became “moshing.” It’s just a theory, but I haven’t heard a better one. I know he would say, “mash it up,” so “MOSH it up.” I think that’s where the term “moshing” originated. I could be wrong.”

H.R.

“We didn’t know that “mashing it up” meant start tearing the club up. That’s what they thought we were saying. We weren’t saying that at all. I was just using the term to express exuberance and jubilance. Anyway, one day I was dancing and I dove out and everybody moved, and I landed flat on my face on the floor. Nobody was there to catch me.”

HONG KONG'S KING LY CHEE BOOKED FOR SUMMER RETURN TO U.S. NORTHEAST

Hong Kong’s KING LY CHEE made some waves earlier this year by getting added as an opener to a short run of Northeast shows with Sick Of It All. On that tour they gave out free copies of their (at the time) new 3 song EP titled “Be Water”. Things went so well that the band has confirmed that they will return for another run of shows in the Northeast in the summer of 2017 as well as plans to record their next studio album here in the States while on that trip. Make sure to check out their singer’s website www.UniteAsia.org  which covers many aspects of the widely under-reported Asian underground music scene. Photo by: Rich Zoeller.

Fresh off a European tour in October with fellow Virginian’s DOWN TO NOTHING Richmond’s BREAK AWAY will soon be hitting the studio to record their sophomore LP which will feature 10 new songs and be titled “Cross My Heart”. Look for this new one in the spring of 2017 on React! Records.

NYC’s MAXIMUM PENALTY are also gearing up for new music in 2017 as they have confirmed they will be doing a new 7” with Reaper Records with recording to start by years end.

SPECIAL BENEFIT SHOW FOR THE FAMILY OF ROB MCALLASTER WHO PLAYED IN IRON CHIC & CAPITAL ON OCTOBER 22ND ON LONG ISLAND

CLICK FLYER FOR EVENT PAGE

A very special hardcore super-group of sorts has formed, appropriately calling themselves HARDCORE JUKEBOX. Members include (but not limited to) Gary Bennett, Vinnie Value, and Mike Delorenzo of Kill Your Idols and Dean of No Redeeming Social Value. The main mission of this hardcore alliance is to honor the life of Rob McAllaster former Iron Chic/ Capital guitarist and to raise money for his family. "NYHC takes care if its own, and we are honored to have the opportunity to do just that", says Gary Bennett (KYI/Sheer Terror), guitarist. "Rob was a big part of the Long Island Hardcore scene and we wanna honor his memory and contribution with a meaningful celebration. Also, his loss hits home with those of us who have a family and children." Hardcore Jukebox's setlist for this one-time special gig at Amityville Music Hall on Oct.22 is a mash up of classic anthems and standard tunes that everyone in attendance is sure to know. "We chose the name of our band because what we do is play the hits, baby" stated Dean/ No Redeeming Social Value. SBC Productions who is the collective behind bringing many great acts (H2O, Murphy's Law, Wisdom in Chains & many other notables) to the Long Island area over the last year is an ally in HCJB's plan to make this show something truly memorable for hardcore fans. Confirmed rumors say that the setlist, in addition to classics by AF, Warzone, 7 Seconds, and other roots hardcore/ punk bands, will also highlight hits by the members of Hardcore Jukebox, as well as some "surprise guests" popping in to help out. "We've got friends/members from our former bands that once they heard we were getting together and jamming, pledged their time and support to make the Hardcore Jukebox set one that people will be talking about as something monumental, so you don't wanna be the one who missed this." says Vinnie Value." "This is going to be really, really fun. we are pulling out all the stops for this show. AMH is a great place for shows.. the best place, in my opinion, on Long Island right now. I would say most everyone there is a friend of Rob, or knew him casually, or are at least fans of the music he played. He was a great guy. I hope this raises up spirits, and some a little something extra for his family.", says Gary. SUPPORT!

IN EFFECT HARDCORE REACHES 1 MILLION VIEWS MARK

In Effect Hardcore started on February 12th, 2012 and on October 7th, 2016 we had our 1 millionth visit to the site. If you are looking at a major corporations website or a website attached to a pop superstar 1 million visits is not that special. This website (and the fanzine that came before it) was always based in DIY ethics and keeping the underground aspect of it first and foremost and we are proud to say that. Hardcore bands are not household names, in most cases don’t sell out huge stadiums and do not sell hundreds of thousands of records and to reach as many people as we have basically by word of mouth and social media is fucking awesome. We would like to thank EVERYONE who had a hand in this including all the contributors that have given their time and effort in some way, the bands who openly provide info and to all the regular and irregular visitors to this site. Without your support this doesn’t happen. CW- October, 2016. Art by: CHUN ONE
